Executive summary Link to heading
Population level and population growth rate are different quantities, and their peaks occur at very different times. The world population is still increasing, so its highest observed level is the present-era level. By contrast, the rate at which the world population grows peaked more than six decades ago.
The current United Nations global demographic revision is World Population Prospects 2024 (WPP 2024). A January 2026 interim update corrected population estimates and medium projections for Togo only; it explicitly left all other locations and global and regional aggregates unchanged. The same release postponed the next full World Population Prospects revision until 11 July 2027. Accordingly, WPP 2024 remains the appropriate current global source as of August 2026. The first four figures are headline results of WPP 2024. The growth-rate history is reconstructed from the UN series by Our World in Data, which reports the annual global growth rate peaking at roughly 2.3 per cent in 1963 and falling below 1 per cent by 2020. These two trajectories are fully compatible. A population can keep reaching new record levels while its growth rate falls, so long as the growth rate remains positive. A car can still move forward while decelerating; likewise, the world can add people each year while adding them at an ever-smaller percentage rate.
The geography of population change is also heterogeneous. WPP 2024 groups countries and areas by the timing of their population peak rather than implying that every region follows the same schedule. Sixty-three countries and areas had already peaked by 2024; another 48 are projected to peak between 2025 and 2054; the remaining 126 are expected to continue growing through 2054 and may peak later in the century or beyond 2100. These categories are better supported for publication than a homemade table of exact regional peak years calculated from an external workbook because they are directly reported by the UN and retain the uncertainty appropriate to long-range projections. 1. What does a population peak mean? Link to heading
1.1 Population level Link to heading
Population level is the number of people alive in a population at a particular time. A population reaches a level peak when that number reaches a maximum and subsequently falls.
For the world as a whole, population level is still increasing. WPP 2024 estimates about 8.2 billion people in 2024 and projects continued growth for another five or six decades. Its central trajectory reaches roughly 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s and then declines gradually to about 10.2 billion by 2100. The phrase mid-2080s should be preferred to an unnecessarily exact single-year claim. Long-range population projections are conditional results generated from assumptions and probabilistic models for fertility, mortality and migration. WPP 2024 provides both deterministic scenarios and probabilistic projections; for the latter, the Population Division generates thousands of trajectories and summarizes their distributions. 1.2 Population growth rate Link to heading
The annual population growth rate measures the proportional change in population over a year. Its peak is not the same event as the maximum population level.
According to the UN-based historical series assembled by Our World in Data, the global annual population growth rate reached approximately 2.3 per cent in 1963. It then declined for decades, falling to about 0.9 per cent in 2023. The UN central projection continues that decline and eventually crosses below zero near the end of the century. Thus the world passed peak percentage growth in the 1960s while remaining decades away from the most likely peak in population size.
1.3 Absolute annual increase is a third quantity Link to heading
A third quantity is the absolute number of people added in a year. It differs from both the level and the percentage growth rate because the same percentage applied to a larger population produces a larger absolute change.
This report does not assign an exact historical peak year to annual absolute population increase. Doing so requires a consistent annual series and a clearly specified convention for measuring the interval. The central analytical point does not depend on that additional statistic: level, percentage growth and absolute annual change are separate measures and should not be interchanged.
2. Why can population keep growing after the growth rate has peaked? Link to heading
At a national level, a population stock changes through births, deaths and net international migration:
\[ P_{t+1} = P_t + B_t - D_t + M_t, \]where \(P\) is population, \(B\) births, \(D\) deaths and \(M\) net migration. At the global level, international migration redistributes people among countries but sums to zero for the world as a whole.
A declining growth rate means the proportional difference between additions and losses is becoming smaller. It does not imply that the difference has already become negative. For example, a world growing at 0.9 per cent is growing more slowly than one growing at 2.3 per cent, but both are still increasing.
Age structure also creates population momentum. A population with a large number of people entering reproductive ages can continue growing for some time even after fertility has fallen substantially, because the number of potential parents remains large. WPP 2024 explicitly incorporates age structure when decomposing projected population change and treats demographic momentum separately from future fertility, mortality and migration effects. This lag between a falling growth rate and a later maximum population level is therefore not anomalous. It is a normal consequence of stock-flow arithmetic and demographic age structure.
3. The global demographic transition Link to heading
WPP 2024 organizes its analysis around the demographic transition: the long-run movement toward longer lives and smaller families. Countries are at different positions in that transition, which helps explain why some are shrinking while others are still growing rapidly. Historically, declines in mortality can initially accelerate population growth when fertility remains high. Later fertility decline narrows the gap between births and deaths and slows population growth. Eventually, sustained low fertility, population ageing and the exhaustion of earlier demographic momentum can bring population growth close to zero or below zero. Migration can materially alter the timing of this sequence for individual countries.
The transition is a framework, not a claim that every society follows an identical path at an identical speed. WPP 2024 models countries separately and incorporates uncertainty in fertility, mortality and net international migration. 4. Countries are already at different population-peak stages Link to heading
The UN’s country grouping provides a more defensible summary of global heterogeneity than imposing one regional timetable.

The categories show why statements such as “the world is overpopulating” or “the world is depopulating” are too coarse to describe present demographic conditions. Both rapid growth and sustained decline are occurring simultaneously in different places.
4.1 Already-peaked populations Link to heading
In the first group, low fertility has persisted long enough that population ageing and natural decrease are already important. WPP 2024 reports that these 63 countries and areas contained 28 per cent of the world’s population in 2024. Their combined population is projected to fall by about 14 per cent over the following three decades. China, Germany, Japan and the Russian Federation are prominent examples. 4.2 Populations approaching a peak Link to heading
The 48 countries and areas expected to peak between 2025 and 2054 represented about 10 per cent of the 2024 world population. Their growth is slowing as fertility falls and their age structures become older. The UN includes Brazil, Iran and Viet Nam in this group; its 2024 press materials also identify Türkiye. 4.3 Populations continuing to grow Link to heading
The remaining 126 countries and areas are projected to keep growing through at least 2054. This group is internally diverse. Some countries are still in a relatively high-fertility stage of the demographic transition; others have lower fertility but continue growing because of population momentum or immigration.
The distinction is especially important for high-income immigration destinations. WPP 2024 notes that Australia, Canada and the United States would likely reach their population peaks substantially earlier without immigration. At the other end of the demographic spectrum, many countries in sub-Saharan Africa retain youthful age structures and considerably higher projected growth. UN DESA Policy Brief No. 167
5. What changed in the 2024 UN projection? Link to heading
The projected global peak is earlier and lower than in older UN revisions. The 2024 release attributes much of the shift to faster-than-previously-anticipated fertility decline in several populous countries, especially China. That revision history illustrates an important principle: population projections are not immutable forecasts. New censuses, surveys, registration data and observed fertility, mortality and migration trends alter both the estimated starting population and future trajectories.
This point is visible again in the January 2026 interim update. Detailed results from Togo’s 2022 census exposed a double adjustment in previous estimates. The Population Division corrected Togo’s population estimates and medium projection while leaving fertility and mortality rates unchanged. It explicitly stated that results for all other locations were unchanged and that global and regional aggregates were not revised. For a global report written in August 2026, the correct approach is therefore to continue using WPP 2024 for global and regional conclusions while documenting that limited 2026 update rather than implying that “WPP 2026” exists.
6. Projection uncertainty and the danger of false precision Link to heading
A projection is conditional on demographic assumptions. WPP 2024 explicitly models uncertainty rather than treating one path as certain. The methodology produces probabilistic trajectories for fertility, mortality and migration and uses them to generate probabilistic population paths to 2100. Several consequences follow.
First, 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s is a useful central summary, not a promise that a particular year will contain an exactly specified number of people. Second, the 80 per cent probability of a peak during this century is more informative than a single deterministic peak date because it communicates the direction and remaining uncertainty simultaneously. Third, country and regional forecasts should not be reported to spurious precision merely because a spreadsheet can return many decimal places.
Long-range demographic projections are generally more constrained than arbitrary extrapolations because today’s age structure places meaningful limits on the near future. They nevertheless become increasingly sensitive to uncertain fertility, mortality and migration paths as the horizon lengthens.
7. What is established, and what remains conditional? Link to heading
Several conclusions are strongly established from observed demographic history:
- the world population is much larger than a century ago and remains at an all-time observed high;
- the annual global population growth rate peaked in the early 1960s and has declined substantially since;
- fertility is below replacement level in more than half of countries and areas;
- many countries have already reached a population maximum while others continue rapid growth;
- demographic conditions differ sharply across countries because fertility, mortality, age structure and migration differ.
Other conclusions are projections and should remain labeled as such:
- the global population will most likely peak around the mid-2080s rather than in some other late-century period;
- the central path will reach about 10.3 billion before declining to around 10.2 billion by 2100;
- any particular country’s peak year, especially several decades ahead;
- the size and timing of long-run decline after a peak.
The UN’s current 80 per cent estimate makes a twenty-first-century global peak highly likely, but not certain. That distinction is essential for interpreting WPP correctly.
8. Conclusion Link to heading
The most important feature of contemporary global population dynamics is not one peak but the separation between several different peaks.
The global growth-rate peak is historical: annual percentage growth reached about 2.3 per cent in 1963 and has fallen to below 1 per cent. The global population-level peak is still projected: WPP 2024 places the central maximum at about 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s, with an estimated 80 per cent probability that the maximum occurs during this century. Meanwhile, individual countries occupy every stage of the demographic transition, from sustained decline to rapid growth.
This framework resolves the apparent contradiction between headlines about continuing population records and headlines about demographic slowdown. The world is still growing, but it is growing progressively more slowly. The most likely long-run outcome under the current UN assessment is a late-century global maximum followed by gradual decline—not indefinite exponential growth and not an already-begun global population collapse.
