The proposition that culture is “parasitic” on unsatisfied human needs contains several different claims that should not be treated as interchangeable. A compensation claim says that people sometimes turn to cultural goods, narratives, rituals, or mediated relationships when psychological needs are frustrated. A substitution claim says that those cultural forms can provide symbolic or partial satisfaction of the frustrated need. A stronger reproduction claim says that a cultural system benefits from the continued nonresolution of the underlying need because repeated frustration sustains repeated attention, consumption, or production.
The first two claims have meaningful empirical support in bounded domains. Consumer-psychology research shows that self-discrepancies can motivate compensatory consumption, including symbolic self-completion, escapism, and other strategies by which goods or experiences regulate threatened identities. Experimental work on social surrogacy shows that favored television programs can be sought under belongingness threat and can temporarily buffer loneliness, rejection, negative mood, and self-esteem loss. Compensatory-control research likewise shows that threatened control can increase reliance on external systems of order, including religious and secular institutions under some conditions. These findings justify a narrow conclusion: some cultural consumption functions as compensation for unmet psychological needs. Evidence for the reproduction claim is more indirect. Online-network research demonstrates that social feedback can reinforce future expressions of moral outrage and that outrage facilitates the sharing of misinformation. These studies establish mechanisms by which high-arousal affect can become self-reinforcing inside digital systems. They do not, by themselves, show that platforms or cultural industries require users to remain lonely, insecure, angry, or dissatisfied. Likewise, the enormous scale of advertising and creator markets shows that attention can be monetized, but market size is not evidence that unresolved need is the causal substrate of that market. The universal thesis is contradicted by evidence that cultural activity also emerges from curiosity, intrinsic motivation, play, competence, social connection, celebration, and flourishing. Self-determination theory treats satisfaction of autonomy, competence, and relatedness as supportive of intrinsic motivation and healthy functioning rather than as conditions under which meaningful activity disappears. Population research also finds positive associations between arts-and-crafts participation and several measures of subjective well-being. Culture can therefore be compensatory, exploitative, generative, or some combination depending on the activity and institutional setting. The most defensible version of the hypothesis is consequently sector-specific:
A cultural system is parasitic on an unmet human need when need frustration measurably increases engagement with the system, the system offers partial or symbolic relief rather than direct resolution, and the system’s reproduction or revenue is strengthened by recurrent engagement while the originating need remains unresolved.
This definition preserves the critical force of the idea while turning it into a claim that can be tested and falsified.
1. Three Claims Hidden Inside “Parasitism” Link to heading
The metaphor becomes analytically useful only after separating three levels.
1.1 Compensation Link to heading
A frustrated need increases the probability of consuming or producing a cultural form. Examples might include turning to a favorite fictional world after rejection, purchasing a status-bearing good after a self-threat, or seeking an ordered worldview after a loss of perceived control.
This is the weakest version and has the strongest evidence. It requires neither pathology nor manipulation by producers. A person may knowingly use music, fiction, ritual, games, or consumption as a coping strategy and may benefit from doing so.
1.2 Symbolic substitution Link to heading
The cultural activity provides an experience that resembles or partially supplies the missing resource without necessarily changing the external condition that created the deficit. A parasocial relationship can provide an experience of belonging without becoming a reciprocal friendship. A status good can symbolically repair a threatened self-concept without changing the underlying social hierarchy. A worldview can restore a sense of order without increasing personal control over the event that caused uncertainty.
Substitution is not inherently harmful. Temporary emotional regulation can be useful. The relevant question is whether the cultural substitute complements direct need satisfaction, facilitates it, competes with it, or becomes the primary response to a chronic problem.
1.3 Reproductive dependence Link to heading
The strongest claim concerns the cultural system rather than the individual consumer. A system is reproductively parasitic when recurrent need frustration reliably supplies engagement and when the system has incentives or mechanisms that preserve, intensify, or repeatedly reactivate the states that drive that engagement.
That claim requires substantially more evidence than showing that lonely people watch television or that distressed consumers buy symbolic goods. It requires a feedback loop.

Evidence for only the first three rows supports compensatory culture. The full sequence is needed to support parasitic reproduction.
2. Evidence for Compensatory Cultural Use Link to heading
2.1 Self-discrepancy and compensatory consumption Link to heading
The clearest general evidence comes from consumer psychology. Mandel, Rucker, Levav, and Galinsky synthesize a literature in which discrepancies between the current self and desired self can change consumption. Their compensatory-consumer-behavior model distinguishes direct resolution from symbolic self-completion, dissociation, escapism, and fluid compensation. Products and experiences can therefore acquire psychological value because they regulate a threat rather than merely satisfy a utilitarian preference. Mandel et al., 2017
This literature supports a mechanism much narrower than the claim that advertising or consumption is founded on misery. It shows that some consumption is need- or threat-regulating and that the form of compensation depends on the threatened domain and the consumer’s available strategies. It also gives the parasitism hypothesis a measurable independent variable: self-discrepancy or threat can be manipulated or measured before consumption rather than inferred from the fact that consumption occurred.
2.2 Favored media as social surrogates Link to heading
Derrick, Gabriel, and Hugenberg provide unusually direct evidence for symbolic substitution in four studies of favored television programs. Participants reported turning toward favored programs when lonely; experimentally activating belongingness needs increased attention to favored programs; and thinking about favored programs buffered several effects of relationship threat. The authors appropriately described the evidence as preliminary evidence for a social-surrogacy hypothesis rather than proof that television substitutes for social life in general. This is close to the mechanism the present hypothesis requires:
belongingness threat → favored mediated social world → partial subjective belonging or threat relief.
But the study does not establish the stronger sequence:
belongingness threat → permanent displacement of reciprocal relationships → industry dependence on continued loneliness.
That distinction is central. Cultural compensation is empirically observable; cultural parasitism requires an additional institutional argument.
2.3 Control, order, and external systems Link to heading
Compensatory-control research supplies another bounded mechanism. Kay and colleagues found that support for external systems such as government or a controlling God can vary with manipulations of perceived personal control, and later reviews developed the claim that religious conviction can sometimes supply compensatory order. The literature also contains failed replications and boundary conditions, so it should not be generalized into a rule that uncertainty automatically produces religion or conspiracy belief. Kay et al., 2008; Kay et al., 2010
The useful lesson is methodological. If a cultural explanation claims that a worldview answers an unmet need for control, the hypothesis can be tested by manipulating or measuring control and observing whether attachment to the worldview changes. “Culture answers anxiety” need not remain a purely interpretive statement.
3. Evidence for Reproduction Through Affect Link to heading
The strongest evidence for the system side of the hypothesis concerns digital feedback, especially outrage. It demonstrates feedback and amplification, though not necessarily need frustration.
Brady and colleagues analyzed millions of tweets and conducted preregistered experiments. Positive social feedback for outrage expressions increased the likelihood of future outrage expression, while users also adjusted expression toward the norms of their networks. The result is a genuine cultural feedback mechanism: an expressive form can be socially reinforced and reproduced through platform-visible rewards. Brady et al., 2021
McLoughlin and colleagues subsequently examined more than one million Facebook links, tens of thousands of tweets, and behavioral experiments. Misinformation sources evoked more outrage than trustworthy sources; outrage increased sharing; and participants were more willing to share outrage-evoking misinformation without first reading it. Again, the relevant finding is not that unhappy people cause misinformation. It is that outrage possesses transmission advantages in specific online information environments. McLoughlin et al., 2024
These studies support part of the reproductive thesis:
affective expression → social reward or sharing advantage → more expression/circulation.
They do not establish that the originating affect reflects an unmet psychological need, that the platform created that need, or that the platform requires the affect to remain unresolved. Those are separate empirical questions.
4. Commercial Scale Is Context, Not Causal Proof Link to heading
The economic stakes are large. IAB/PwC reported U.S. internet advertising revenue of about $294.6 billion in 2025, while IAB separately projected U.S. creator-economy ad spend at roughly $37 billion for 2025. These figures demonstrate the size of systems that convert attention and engagement into revenue. IAB/PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report, 2026
They do not demonstrate that the underlying attention was generated by loneliness, status anxiety, trauma, or dissatisfaction. A market can monetize sports enthusiasm, practical search, comedy, music, friendship, hobby expertise, curiosity, and positive identification just as readily as it can monetize insecurity or outrage.
Accordingly, the claim that a particular cultural industry is parasitic requires evidence at the level of engagement mechanism, not merely revenue. The following inferential move is invalid:
a large advertising market + widespread loneliness = advertising structurally depends on loneliness.
A defensible study would instead show that a defined measure of need frustration predicts engagement, that producers or recommendation systems identify and exploit the associated behavioral signal, and that the resulting engagement is commercially valuable while the underlying deficit remains unresolved.
5. Background Need Frustration Does Not Establish Cultural Causation Link to heading
Unmet social needs are common enough to make compensatory behavior an important research target. The World Health Organization’s 2025 Commission on Social Connection estimated that roughly one in six people globally experiences loneliness, with especially high prevalence among younger people. Prevalence, however, should not be confused with explanation. A society can simultaneously have high loneliness and high media consumption without one causing the other. The relevant causal questions are individual and institutional:
- Does loneliness precede increased use of the specific cultural form?
- Does experimentally or naturally changing loneliness change that use?
- What psychological effect does the use produce?
- Does the cultural use crowd out, complement, or have no effect on reciprocal social connection?
- Does the producer or platform gain from the recurrent pattern?
The same discipline applies to insecurity, grief, identity threat, status discrepancy, or perceived lack of control.
6. Counterevidence: Culture From Satisfaction, Play, and Flourishing Link to heading
A universal deficit theory of culture would predict that cultural production or engagement should diminish as psychological needs are satisfied. Existing motivational research provides no basis for that expectation.
Self-determination theory distinguishes need satisfaction from need frustration and links satisfaction of autonomy, competence, and relatedness to healthier motivation and functioning. Reviews of intrinsic motivation likewise describe people as capable of learning, mastery, exploration, and creative engagement under need-supportive conditions. A person can make music because the activity is interesting and mastery is pleasurable, not because music is compensating for a wound. Vansteenkiste, Ryan, and Soenens, 2020; Ryan and Deci, 2020
Arts participation also cannot be classified only as a symptom of deficit. In a 2024 analysis of 7,182 adults in England, arts-and-crafts participation positively predicted life satisfaction, happiness, and a sense that life was worthwhile after adjustment for several sociodemographic variables. This observational result does not prove that arts activity causes flourishing, but it is plainly inconsistent with the assumption that cultural engagement is intelligible only as a marker of deprivation. Culture can therefore emerge from at least two broad motivational routes:

Real cultural practices can contain both routes simultaneously.
7. A More Precise Taxonomy Link to heading
Rather than classifying whole media or genres as parasitic by intuition, four categories are more useful.
Generative culture Link to heading
The activity is substantially supported by intrinsic interest, mastery, reciprocal sociality, celebration, exploration, or play. Need satisfaction can sustain rather than extinguish participation.
Compensatory culture Link to heading
Need frustration measurably increases engagement, and engagement offers symbolic or emotional relief. The available evidence on self-discrepancy and favored-media social surrogacy fits here.
Extractive culture Link to heading
A commercial or institutional system monetizes high engagement generated by psychological states such as threat, outrage, insecurity, or status competition. Evidence of extraction requires a producer or platform incentive, not just evidence that the consumer was distressed.
Parasitic culture Link to heading
The strongest category should be reserved for systems in which the following entire pattern is demonstrated: unmet need increases engagement; engagement provides partial rather than direct resolution; recurrence follows persistent need; and the system benefits from or optimizes for the recurrent state. A parasitic system need not intentionally cause the original deficit, but its reproduction is materially helped by the deficit’s persistence.
This taxonomy prevents a common equivocation. A cultural form can be compensatory without being extractive; extractive without being tied to an unmet basic need; restorative despite having originated in suffering; or simultaneously generative for one participant and exploitative for another.
8. What a Direct Test Would Require Link to heading
The strong thesis is testable. A useful research program would combine individual longitudinal data with platform or market data.
Individual-level design Link to heading
- Measure a specified need or discrepancy before cultural engagement.
- Track actual rather than recalled cultural use over time.
- Measure immediate changes in affect, belonging, control, self-esteem, or perceived competence.
- Separately measure real-world resolution of the originating condition.
- Test whether unresolved need predicts recurrence after controlling for ordinary preference and habit.
System-level design Link to heading
- Identify content features associated with the need-driven engagement.
- Determine whether ranking, recommendation, advertising, pricing, or creator incentives reward those features.
- Estimate the incremental revenue or retention attributable to the need-linked engagement.
- Test whether interventions that directly satisfy the need reduce, leave unchanged, or increase engagement.
- Compare the result with positive-interest controls such as hobby mastery, celebration, or intrinsically motivated creation.
The decisive counterfactual is especially important. If direct improvement in belonging, control, security, or status leaves use unchanged, then recurrent consumption may simply reflect preference. If direct improvement reliably reduces engagement with a specific symbolic substitute, the compensation hypothesis becomes much stronger. If a platform’s optimization then preferentially restores the need-linked engagement, the reproductive-parasitism claim becomes empirically plausible.

The broad proposition that culture is parasitic on unsatisfied human needs is too strong. Human beings also make and consume culture under conditions of satisfaction, curiosity, mastery, play, celebration, and reciprocal connection. Psychological need satisfaction does not imply cultural silence.
A narrower theory survives and is more useful. Some cultural behavior is demonstrably compensatory: threats to self, belonging, or control can redirect people toward symbolic goods, favored media, or ordered worldviews that provide partial psychological relief. Some digital cultural forms also possess self-reinforcing affective transmission mechanisms: outrage can be rewarded, learned, and spread. Some commercial systems monetize the resulting engagement.
Those findings do not yet establish the complete loop in which cultural institutions structurally require the underlying need to remain unsatisfied. That final step should be treated as a research hypothesis, not as a premise. “Parasitic culture” is therefore most defensible as a strict institutional category for cases where recurrent unresolved need is shown to be an input into system reproduction, rather than as a universal description of symbolic life.
